What organizations can help me with my delinquent utility bills?

When are utility bills due?
Utility bills are usually mailed out on the last business day of the month and are due upon receipt. The last day to pay without a penalty is the 20th of each month. If the 20th falls upon a weekend or a holiday it is still due on the 20th. Customers have between the 21st and 25th of the month to pay with a penalty. The 26th of each month is the shutoff day. 

What will happen if I cannot pay my bill by the due date?
Any payments received after the 20th of the month will be subject to a penalty. If a customer cannot pay their bill in full by the end of business day on the 25th, they will be subject to disconnection.

If a customer has a serious medical condition, submit valid medical documentation to City Hall.

24/7 Payment Options 

  • www.monroecitymo.org (pay by credit card, processing fees apply) utilizing the make an online payment option under the Utilities tab in the top right corner.
  • Outside Payment Boxes: One located at North entrance of City Hall, and the other located in front of City Hall 109 Second Street, accessible from your vehicle.
  • Payments can be mailed to PO Box 67, Monroe City, Missouri 63456. (Customers utilizing the postal service should take note: due to serious delays in the mail system we encourage customers to reach out to the city to explore other payment options.) The City of Monroe City does not manage the postal service and are not responsible for delays in the mail.

 

Utility Meter Accessibility

  • Every month City personnel read the meters at each residence and business in town. ALL METERS MUST BE ACCESSABLE BY CITY PERSONNEL AT ALL TIMES. This is to ensure reliable, safe, and accurate utility service. The ordinance requires customers to keep a 3-foot obstruction clearance from all city utility meters.

Meter Reading

  • Monthly meter reading dates are the second Tuesday & Wednesday of each month. These dates are subject to change due to City Hall closures, utility emergencies, hazardous weather or staff shortages.

Monthly Meter Facility Fees (subject to change)

  • These fees are included in your monthly charges:
  • $7.50 per gas meter
  • $30.00 per sewer connection
  • $23.00 per electric meter (residential & commercial)
  • $20.00 per water connection
  • $13.18 residential sanitation

What do I do if my utility bill is not correct?
Should you have an issue with a utility service – electric, gas, water or sewer – please contact the City of Monroe City at 573-735-4585 or contact Monroe County 911 at 573-735-4411 so that a utility employee can be called out to review the situation to determine if it is a City issue or the citizen’s issue. The City of Monroe City will NOT be responsible for any bills citizens incur for review/repair of utility services. The City is only responsible for the utility services to the residents’ meter. Residents are responsible for any repairs or services needed from the meter to their residency. Residents are prohibited from tampering with the City utility meters.
